Houston Teens Caught on Camera in Brutal Robbery That Left Mother Paralyzed

A Houston woman’s routine trip to the bank turned into a life-changing ordeal after two teenagers allegedly followed her to a shopping center and robbed her in broad daylight. Surveillance footage captured the violent attack, which left the mother of three with severe spinal injuries and unable to walk.
The victim, Nhung Truong, had withdrawn approximately $4,300 from a Bank of America branch on February 13, 2023. She intended to use the money for a planned trip to visit family in Vietnam.
According to Houston police, the suspects followed Truong from the bank to a shopping center in southwest Houston, where the robbery unfolded.
Surveillance Footage Captures the Attack
Video of the incident showed a male suspect approaching Truong and grabbing her belongings. After initially running off with the wrong item, he reportedly turned back to take the envelope containing her cash.
The suspect then grabbed Truong and slammed her onto the concrete before fleeing with the money. The force of the impact caused devastating injuries to her spine, leaving her paralyzed.
Investigators used surveillance footage and information about the vehicle seen leaving the scene to help identify those suspected of being involved.
The attack drew widespread attention because of the apparent brutality of the robbery and the serious consequences for a woman who had simply withdrawn money from her bank.
Two Teenagers Arrested

On March 17, 2023, Houston police announced the arrests of Joseph Harrell, 17, and Zy’Nika Ayesha Woods, 19. Both were charged with aggravated robbery in connection with the attack.
Investigators alleged that Woods drove the vehicle while Harrell got out and assaulted Truong. Police said Woods admitted her involvement during questioning and implicated Harrell. Authorities also reported that Harrell confessed to his role in the incident.
Police described the crime as “jugging,” a type of robbery in which criminals watch people withdraw money from a bank or ATM and then follow them in an attempt to steal the cash.
Officials warned the public to remain alert after withdrawing money and to seek help if they believe they are being followed.
The Victim’s Long Road to Recovery
Truong spent more than a month in the hospital before being discharged in March 2023. Her injuries left her dependent on a wheelchair, and she faced an extended rehabilitation process.
The attack also had serious financial consequences for her family. Truong had been the household’s primary breadwinner since her husband died in 2016, but her injuries prevented her from returning to work. Her family launched an online fundraiser to help cover medical and living expenses.
Despite what happened, Truong expressed hope that her attacker might change his behavior in the future.
Both Defendants Later Received Sentences
The case proceeded through the courts. According to FOX 26 Houston, Harrell pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery causing serious bodily injury and was sentenced to 30 years in prison. He was required to serve at least half the sentence before becoming eligible for parole under the terms of his plea agreement.
Woods also pleaded guilty and received a sentence of 10 years of deferred adjudication, according to the same report.
The case remains a stark example of how a robbery targeting someone carrying cash can leave a victim with life-altering injuries long after the stolen money is gone.
