Laura Owens Sentenced to Jail After Fake Pregnancy Claims Involving Former ‘Bachelor’ Star Clayton Echard

Laura Owens, the Arizona woman whose claims of being pregnant with twins led to a high-profile legal battle with former Bachelor star Clayton Echard, has been sentenced to 30 days in jail and seven years of probation.
The sentence was handed down on October 23, 2026, after Owens pleaded guilty to four felony counts connected to false pregnancy claims involving Echard and another man. The case drew widespread attention after investigators alleged that she fabricated pregnancy evidence and made false statements under oath.
A Pregnancy Claim That Led to a Court Battle
The case began in 2023, when Owens claimed that Echard had fathered her twins following an encounter between the two. Echard, who starred in Season 26 of The Bachelor, disputed her claim.
Owens subsequently filed a paternity lawsuit seeking child support. She later said she had miscarried and dropped the lawsuit.
The dispute escalated as the court examined the evidence presented during the proceedings. In 2024, a judge found that Owens had falsified sonograms, altered medical records and lied under oath. The matter was referred to prosecutors for a criminal investigation.
Investigators Uncovered Allegedly Fabricated Evidence
Prosecutors said that between May 2023 and June 2024, Owens altered an ultrasound image, created a video that purported to show her pregnancy and repeatedly lied under oath during the paternity case.
Investigators also linked her to a separate pregnancy claim involving another man, Greg Gillespie, whom she had dated in 2021.
According to prosecutors, the alleged scheme involved fabricated medical records and the use of another woman’s identity. One ultrasound image was reportedly taken from Stormy Mitchell, a woman who had experienced the loss of one of her twins.
Mitchell’s account added another painful dimension to the case, as the image had personal significance connected to her pregnancy loss.
Owens pleaded guilty in August 2026 to four felony offenses. Other charges were dismissed as part of the plea agreement.
Clayton Echard Speaks at Sentencing

At the sentencing hearing, Echard urged the judge to impose a prison sentence, arguing that the case had caused significant emotional and personal harm.
He said the legal fight had continued for years and expressed concern about the possibility of further victims.
Owens also addressed the court, apologizing for the pain, distress and expenses she had caused. She became emotional while discussing the consequences of her actions and the impact the case had had on her family.
The two presented sharply different views of the situation: while Owens expressed remorse, Echard questioned whether her apology reflected genuine regret.
Judge Orders Jail Time and Probation
Judge Jeffrey Rueter sentenced Owens to 30 days in county jail, followed by seven years of probation, according to PEOPLE’s report.
The judge considered the harm caused to the victims alongside mitigating factors, including Owens’ lack of a prior criminal record and her guilty plea. He concluded that a prison sentence was not appropriate for the nonviolent offenses in this case.
Owens must comply with the conditions of her probation, including restrictions on contacting the victims. Violating the terms could expose her to a much longer prison sentence.
The ruling brings a major stage of the yearslong legal dispute to a close, although the consequences for those involved may continue well beyond the courtroom.
