Two women were killed and several others injured in a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 277 in Charlotte, North Carolina, after a 19-year-old driver allegedly traveled the wrong way along the freeway without headlights.
Police identified the suspect as Kati Covarrubias-Barron. Investigators said the collision occurred shortly after midnight on October 18, 2026, when a Toyota RAV4 driven by Covarrubias-Barron struck a Hyundai Venue traveling in the correct direction. The impact sent the Hyundai into a third vehicle.
The two women who died were identified as My’Angel Vonshay Robinson and Audrey Diamond Dawson. Robinson was pronounced dead at the scene, while Dawson was taken to hospital and later died from her injuries. Other people involved in the collision were also hospitalized.
According to arrest records reported by local media, Covarrubias-Barron allegedly told officers she had consumed about five alcoholic drinks within two hours before the crash. Police said she was found to be impaired during a hospital screening. Investigators also reported that she did not have a valid driver’s license.

Covarrubias-Barron faces two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of felony serious injury by vehicle, and additional charges related to impaired driving and reckless driving. These remain allegations, and the case has not been decided in court.
