Utah Father Accused of Whipping Teenage Daughter With Jump Rope After She Struggled to Finish Workout

A Utah father is facing a serious child abuse charge after allegedly striking his 14-year-old daughter with a jump rope when she was unable to complete a demanding weightlifting routine at their home.
Peter James Reid, 35, of Provo, was arrested after police responded to a call at the residence on October 10, according to reports citing court documents. He has been charged with aggravated child abuse, a first-degree felony.
Investigators allege that Reid was supervising his daughter’s workout and instructed her to perform squats with a weighted barbell. The teenager reportedly completed a few repetitions before telling him she was tired and could not continue. When she refused to keep going, he allegedly became angry.
According to charging documents, Reid picked up a plastic-coated jump rope and struck the girl at least three times while she was curled up in a fetal position. The alleged assault left visible welts on her shoulder, buttocks, lower back and calf.
When officers arrived, the teenager was reportedly crying and hyperventilating. She showed an officer the injuries, which were described in the police paperwork as prominent red marks consistent with being struck by a jump rope.
Court documents also detail the father’s reported exercise expectations. Reid allegedly told investigators that his daughter worked out twice daily, five to six days a week, and said he was frustrated that she was not completing the exercises to the best of her abilities.
The father reportedly left the home after the incident, saying he needed to cool off, but returned while officers were still present. He was subsequently arrested and booked into the Utah County Jail, according to local reports.

Reid has been charged with aggravated child abuse. The allegations have not been proven in court, and he is presumed innocent unless found guilty.
