Teacher Accused in Arkansas Hiking Murders Worked in Four School Districts Across Three States

A former elementary school teacher accused of killing a married couple during a family hike in Arkansas had worked in four school districts across three states before the fatal attack, raising questions about how schools evaluate prospective employees.

Andrew James McGann, 28, was charged with two counts of capital murder following the deaths of Clinton David Brink, 43, and Cristen Amanda Brink, 41, at Devil’s Den State Park on July 26, 2025. The couple had been hiking with their young daughters when they were attacked.

According to authorities, McGann was arrested at a barbershop in Springdale, Arkansas, after a five-day search. Investigators said he admitted to fatally stabbing the couple, although the charges and evidence remain matters for the legal process.

Before the killings, McGann had taught in Texas and Oklahoma and was preparing to begin a new teaching position in Arkansas. His employment history included Donald Elementary School in Flower Mound, Texas, where he was placed on administrative leave in spring 2023.

Officials with the Lewisville Independent School District said the leave followed concerns about classroom management, professional judgment and student favoritism. The district reported that McGann resigned in May 2023.

He subsequently worked in two Oklahoma school districts. Officials there said he had passed the required background checks, and public records showed no disciplinary infractions or suspensions on his teaching licenses in Texas, Oklahoma or Arkansas.

The case has prompted questions about whether school hiring systems share enough information across district and state lines. Former FBI special agent Bill Daly told Fox News that background checks can vary significantly and may fail to capture warning signs that emerge over time.

The Brinks’ deaths have devastated their family and renewed attention to the safety of children and families in public spaces. Their daughters survived the attack.

McGann’s previous employment history is now receiving scrutiny as the criminal case proceeds. The allegations against him remain subject to the judicial process.
