Indiana Mom of Three Was Filming a TikTok When Her Ex-Boyfriend Allegedly Appeared at the Window

A 25-year-old Indiana mother of three was fatally shot while filming a TikTok video with a friend, in a case that has drawn attention to allegations of domestic violence and a protection order that failed to keep her safe.
Kaitlynn Lee was killed at an apartment in New Albany, Indiana, on August 10, 2024. Police responding to a report of gunfire found her suffering from a fatal gunshot wound.
According to court documents cited by local media, Lee and her friend had been recording a TikTok video in the kitchen when they heard someone banging on a window. Lee reportedly asked, “What are you doing here?” Moments later, she was shot.
Her friend told investigators that she saw Lee’s ex-boyfriend, Joshua Thompson, 25, outside the window holding a gun. Thompson was subsequently arrested and charged with murder.
Investigators reportedly reviewed the TikTok footage, which showed the two women laughing, dancing and singing before they turned toward the kitchen window. A gunshot was then heard, and the recording abruptly ended.
The case also brought renewed attention to Lee’s reported history with Thompson. Her aunt, Pamela Greenwell, told local television station WAVE that Lee had moved several times in the months before her death because of problems involving her former partner. Greenwell also described an earlier alleged assault that resulted in Thompson’s arrest and a protective order.
According to police records reported by local media, Thompson allegedly told investigators that he went to Lee’s apartment because he wanted to know whether she was with another man, despite a no-contact order.
After the shooting, Thompson allegedly contacted his brother and admitted that he had killed Lee. He also reportedly called 911 and said he had shot the mother of his child before indicating that he would surrender.

In addition to murder, Thompson faced charges including invasion of privacy, criminal recklessness and unlawful carrying of a handgun.
Lee’s death left her three young children without their mother. Relatives described their loss as devastating and established a fundraiser to help with funeral expenses and support the children.
The case has highlighted the devastating consequences of alleged intimate-partner violence and the concerns families face when protective orders fail to prevent further harm.
