Walmart Worker Shot Dead After Marriage Dispute as Husband Faces Murder Charges

A 45-year-old Walmart employee was fatally shot outside the Pennsylvania store where she worked, and her estranged husband has been charged with murder in a case investigators say involved a bitter dispute over immigration status.
Latosha Ann Cooper was killed on October 21, 2026, in the parking lot of a Walmart in Cheltenham Township, Montgomery County. According to investigators, the shooting occurred shortly before 11:30 p.m., as she was leaving work and speaking with a co-worker near her car.
Authorities have charged Destino Jean Louis, 23, a Haitian national who previously worked at the same Walmart, with first-degree murder, third-degree murder and several firearm-related offenses.
Investigators Allege He Waited Outside the Store
According to court documents, Jean Louis allegedly wore a mask and waited near bushes outside the store before approaching Cooper as she left her shift. Prosecutors allege that he shot her and fled the scene.
Investigators also said cellphone records placed Jean Louis near the Walmart on multiple occasions in the weeks before the killing. Court documents further allege that he contacted store employees to ask about Cooper’s work schedule.
Authorities said the pair had been in a relationship and obtained a marriage license in March 2025, with a ceremony taking place the following month. Investigators believe the marriage was connected to an attempt to help Jean Louis obtain legal immigration status in the United States.
The relationship later deteriorated. According to court filings, Cooper withdrew her petition to sponsor him in July 2026 after immigration officials declined to approve the application.
Arrested Before He Could Leave the Country
U.S. Marshals arrested Jean Louis in Philadelphia on October 23 on immigration-related charges. Authorities subsequently transferred him to local custody to face the murder charges.
Investigators allege that the immigration dispute and the breakdown of the relationship were connected to the killing. Jean Louis, however, denied being at the Walmart when Cooper was shot, according to local media reports.
He is being held without bail at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility while the case proceeds. The charges are allegations, and the case has not yet been resolved in court.
A Family Left Grieving

Cooper’s death has drawn attention to the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including the allegations of a failed marriage arrangement, repeated inquiries about her work schedule and the events leading up to the fatal encounter.
Investigators continue to rely on witness accounts, cellphone records and other evidence as the legal process moves forward.
