The Bracelet He Stole

PART 3 — THE MORETTI FAMILY’S ANGER

Adrian’s mother, Victoria Moretti, entered the bedroom before anyone could stop her.

She was an elegant woman in her early sixties, dressed in a cream-colored coat. Behind her stood Adrian’s father, Richard, looking considerably less patient.

Victoria immediately approached me.

“Claire, sweetheart, are you all right?”

I nodded politely.

“I’m fine, Mother.”

Her eyes moved to my bare wrist, then to the wedding ring on the nightstand.

She slowly turned toward her son.

“Adrian, what have you done?”

“Mom, please. This is between my wife and me.”

Richard stepped forward.

“Then explain why another woman was wearing Eleanor’s bracelet at Ethan’s wedding.”

Adrian exhaled sharply.

“I already explained. Sophia borrowed it.”

“Without Claire’s permission?” Victoria demanded.

Adrian didn’t answer.

I quietly interrupted.

“Actually, he took it from me six months ago. He said it needed repairing. I never gave him permission to lend it to anyone.”

Victoria looked horrified.

“That bracelet was Eleanor’s final gift to you!”

“I know.”

“And you let Sophia wear it?”

Adrian’s voice grew defensive.

“She’s known me since childhood. It wasn’t some romantic gesture.”

Richard let out a humorless laugh.

“Then why did she post that photograph with the caption about your shoulder feeling like home?”

Adrian’s face darkened.

“That was just a stupid caption.”

I smiled faintly.

“Apparently, everyone understands your relationship better than I do.”

He turned toward me.

“Claire, stop twisting everything. Sophia and I have known each other for years. You knew that before marrying me.”

“Yes. I knew she was your childhood sweetheart. I didn’t know I was marrying a man who would keep making his wife compete with her.”

Silence filled the room.

Victoria took my hand.

“Claire, you are Eleanor’s chosen granddaughter-in-law. No one has the right to take what she gave you.”

Then Richard reached into his coat and removed his phone.

“I want Sophia Reynolds brought here.”

Adrian immediately stepped forward.

“Leave her out of this.”

Richard’s eyes turned cold.

“Interesting. You were comfortable bringing her into your marriage, but now you want to protect her from the consequences?”

Before Adrian could respond, my phone vibrated.

A message had appeared from an unknown number.

Claire, I think you should know the truth before you make any decisions about your marriage.

A second message followed.

It contained a photograph of Sophia sitting beside Eleanor in a hospital room.

And beneath it were six words:

Your husband has been lying for years.

I stared at the screen.

Then I looked up at Adrian.

For the first time that morning, he looked genuinely frightened.

“Claire,” he said quietly. “Don’t open that.”

But it was already too late.

I had pressed the photograph.

And what I discovered next would change everything I believed about my marriage.
