Before Morning PART 2 — THE LIE BEHIND HER ARRIVAL

Before Morning

PART 2 — THE LIE BEHIND HER ARRIVAL

Daniel drove straight to his penthouse downtown.

He didn’t ask another question until the security doors had locked behind us.

Then he placed the photograph on the kitchen counter.

“Elena, I want you to tell me everything. From the beginning.”

So I did.

The emergency call. Vanessa’s arrival. Adrian’s excuses. The message on his phone.

Daniel listened without interrupting.

When I finished, he leaned back in his chair.

“Your fiancé knew she was coming?”

“Apparently.”

“And he let you believe she was a helpless woman who needed protection.”

I nodded.

Daniel picked up his phone.

“Marcus sent you those photographs for a reason. I’m going to find out what he knows.”

Twenty minutes later, my phone rang.

Adrian.

I answered this time.

“Where are you?” His voice was sharp.

“Somewhere safe.”

“Elena, this isn’t funny. You left without telling me, took your belongings, and left your engagement ring behind.”

“I left you a note.”

“I don’t care about the note. Come home.”

I closed my eyes.

“Why did Vanessa arrive forty-seven minutes before your emergency call?”

Silence.

Then Adrian spoke.

“Who told you that?”

“Does it matter?”

“Elena, listen to me. There are things you don’t understand.”

“Then explain them.”

“I was trying to handle a complicated situation.”

“By lying to your fiancée?”

“She was in danger.”

“Then why did your driver bring her here before you supposedly knew about the attack?”

Another silence.

Finally, he lowered his voice.

“Come home. We’ll discuss everything privately.”

“No, Adrian. You had all night to discuss things with me. Instead, you called me another problem.”

He exhaled.

“I shouldn’t have said that.”

“But you did.”

I ended the call.

Daniel watched me carefully.

“Are you sure you want to walk away?”

I looked at the engagement ring box sitting in my handbag.

“I was sure when I packed my suitcase.”

At eight in the morning, Marcus sent another message.

It contained a video from the front gate.

Vanessa stepped out of the SUV wearing a beautiful black dress. There was no visible injury. She was laughing with Adrian’s driver.

Then the footage showed Adrian’s car arriving.

He stepped out, looked directly at Vanessa, and embraced her.

Not the cautious embrace of a man comforting a frightened woman.

It was familiar.

Intimate.

Like two people who had been waiting to see each other.

My stomach tightened.

A second message appeared.

There’s more. Vanessa brought a document with her. I found a copy in the security office.

I opened the attached photograph.

It was a printed agreement bearing Adrian’s signature.

My eyes moved across the page until I reached the heading.

VALE HOUSE — TEMPORARY RESIDENCY AND SECURITY AUTHORIZATION.

The document had been signed three days earlier.

Three days before Vanessa supposedly needed emergency protection.

Daniel read over my shoulder.

“He’s been planning this.”

I stared at Adrian’s signature.

“No,” I whispered. “He’s been hiding it.”

Then Marcus sent one final message.

Elena, I think Vanessa is trying to get your position in the company as well.

That was when I understood this wasn’t simply about an old relationship.

It was about something much bigger.

And I had a feeling Adrian was going to regret keeping me in the dark.
