Vanessa Bautista Remembered as Devoted Mother After Tragic Death at 24

Vanessa Bautista, a 24-year-old mother from South Bend, Indiana, is being remembered by her family as a devoted mother whose two young sons were the greatest joy of her life.

Vanessa and her close friend, Alexa Navarro, 23, were reported missing after they were last seen in the early morning hours of September 13, 2026. Their disappearance followed a birthday celebration in Elkhart, Indiana. Their last known location was later traced to the Niles, Michigan, area.

Authorities eventually discovered a gray Jeep Grand Cherokee submerged in the St. Joseph River in Niles. The vehicle was believed to have gone over an embankment and traveled roughly 60 to 70 feet down a steep slope before entering the water. Investigators said the Jeep struck trees on the way down.

The vehicle was recovered from the river on Tuesday evening, September 15, and two bodies were found inside. The Berrien County medical examiner later confirmed that they were Vanessa and Alexa. The official cause of death remains pending, with autopsy and toxicology results expected to take additional time.

Police have been examining multiple possibilities surrounding the crash. Niles Police Chief James Millin said investigators were looking into statements suggesting the women may have been followed or chased. However, authorities have not confirmed those reports, and there is currently no public evidence establishing that another person intentionally forced the Jeep into the river.

In a heartbreaking obituary published after Vanessa’s death, her family described her as a “loving, protective, and devoted mother.” Her sons, Jaire and Jessiah, were described as her entire world, with the family saying Vanessa’s greatest joy was being a mother.

The obituary also recalled Vanessa’s close relationship with her family and her ability to bring laughter wherever she went. She was remembered for her warmth, playful personality and the way she made people feel welcome.

Vanessa had celebrated her 24th birthday on September 9, just four days before she disappeared. Her family said she was also eagerly looking forward to the arrival of her sister Michelle’s baby and had been joking with her sister about not having the baby on Vanessa’s birthday.
