Eight men have been arrested following a violent disturbance in St Helens that involved people reportedly armed with bats and poles. Extra police officers have since been deployed in the area as authorities work to prevent further disorder.

Merseyside Police said officers were called after a group of men were seen fighting on St Helens Linkway on Thursday. Six of those arrested were aged between 15 and 19 and were detained on suspicion of affray and possession of offensive weapons in a public place.

Two other men, aged 18 and 22, were arrested on suspicion of affray. Police have increased their presence in the area following the incident.

A temporary dispersal zone was introduced, giving officers powers to direct people to leave the area and prevent them from returning for up to 48 hours. A stop-and-search order was also put in place to provide police with additional powers while the operation continued.

Police said the measures were intended to reduce the risk of further violence and reassure local residents. Additional officers have been conducting patrols and monitoring the area.

The incident has prompted a heightened police response in St Helens, with authorities urging residents to remain alert while the measures remain in effect.

The arrests remain part of an ongoing investigation, and those detained are being dealt with in accordance with police procedures.
