Father of Murdered Spanish Student Arrives in Mexico After Suspect Detained
CUAUTLA, Morelos, Mexico — September 19, 2026

The father of a 21-year-old Spanish exchange student killed in Mexico arrived in the state of Morelos on Friday to identify and receive his daughter’s body, one day after authorities detained a suspect in the case.

Claudia Tacoronte, a student from Spain’s University of Granada, was fatally stabbed in the city of Cuautla on September 12, Mexican authorities said. The killing is being investigated as a femicide.

Student Killed During Exchange Program
Tacoronte had arrived in Mexico in mid-August as part of an academic exchange program with the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos.

She had been staying at a cultural center in Cuautla, where she was attending a conference connected to a medicinal plant festival.

According to Morelos state prosecutor Fernando Blumenkron, Tacoronte was attacked outside the cultural building. Authorities said the incident followed an attempted cellphone theft.

Suspect Detained
Authorities announced Thursday that they had detained a suspect identified as Francisco Javier “N.”

The suspect was expected to appear before a judge on Friday. Mexican authorities are pursuing the case as femicide, and the state prosecutor said prosecutors would seek the maximum penalty of 70 years in prison if convicted.

Spanish newspaper El País, citing sources close to the investigation, reported that the suspect had confessed to the killing. That reported confession has not yet been established as a final court finding.

Father Travels to Identify His Daughter
Tacoronte’s father travelled to Morelos on Friday to identify and receive his daughter’s remains.

The case has prompted anger among students in both Mexico and Spain, with calls for stronger protections for women.

Students at the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos have held vigils and called for justice following Tacoronte’s death.

University Cancels Future Exchange Placements
Tacoronte’s death has also affected academic exchange programs between Spain and Morelos.

The University of Granada has canceled exchange placements for three students who were scheduled to study in Morelos during the next semester.

Spain’s Foreign Ministry has also advised citizens against non-essential travel to the state, citing security concerns including drug-related violence and kidnappings.

Investigation Continues
Tacoronte’s killing has drawn attention to violence against women in Morelos.

Official figures cited by Reuters show that 21 femicides were registered in Morelos between January and July 2026, while 380 were recorded nationwide during the same period.

The suspect’s legal proceedings and the investigation into Tacoronte’s death remain ongoing.
