Man Rescued by Helicopter After Becoming Trapped on Rocky Cliff Along California Coast

Sonoma County, California, USA — September 27, 2026

A man was rescued by helicopter after becoming stranded on a rocky cliff along California’s Sonoma Coast, where powerful waves threatened to sweep him into the Pacific Ocean.

Man Becomes Trapped on Rocky Outcrop

Emergency crews were called to Rocky Point, just south of Sea Ranch, at around 11:40 a.m. Sunday after receiving reports that a man was struggling to remain on a slippery rocky promontory.

Rescuers later determined that the man had apparently been swimming in the ocean before reaching the rocky outcrop. He was about 100 yards offshore, surrounded by cold water and waves that repeatedly crashed over the rocks.

Helicopter Crew Carries Out Rescue

Cal Fire and other emergency agencies responded to the scene. The Henry One helicopter located the man while crews on the ground and water prepared to assist.

A 100-foot cable was lowered from the helicopter. A Sheriff’s Tactical Flight Officer then secured the man using a horse-collar rescue device and lifted him from the exposed rocks to the nearby bluff.

Man Treated for Cold Water Exposure

After reaching safety, the man was assessed by emergency medical personnel. He was treated for exposure to the cold water and was later released.

During the same response, rescuers received a separate report about two people who appeared to be stranded on another nearby rock. Crews later determined that the two people were fishermen and did not require assistance.

Rescuers Respond to Dangerous Coastal Conditions

The incident involved several agencies, including the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office, Cal Fire, North Sonoma Coast Fire Protection District and Coast Life Support District.

The rescue serves as another reminder of the dangers that can develop quickly along rocky coastal areas, where cold water, slippery surfaces and changing waves can make it difficult for people to return safely to shore.
