Fresno Jiu-Jitsu Instructor Arrested in Child Sexual Assault Investigation
FRESNO, California — September 19, 2026

A former Fresno jiu-jitsu instructor and gym owner has been arrested in connection with an investigation into the alleged sexual assault of a minor, according to Fresno police.

Michael Monson, 48, was taken into custody at his Fresno home on Wednesday evening. Jail records show he was released on bond early Thursday morning. Police have released few details about the allegations, and the investigation remains active.

Former Gym Owner Arrested
Monson previously served as the head instructor and owner of a jiu-jitsu gym in northwest Fresno that operated under the Jean Jacques Machado Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu franchise.

According to representatives of the franchise, the organization learned about the allegations against Monson on August 21 and ended its relationship with him the same day.

The organization said the conduct alleged was inconsistent with the standards and values expected of its affiliated schools.

Gym Changes Ownership and Name
Following the split, the Fresno gym underwent a change in ownership and was rebranded as Frontline.

Paul Elizondo, the facility’s new head instructor, said he initially considered leaving after learning about the allegations. He later agreed to take over the gym.

Elizondo acknowledged that some parents questioned how information about Monson’s departure had been communicated. He said he initially regarded the information as rumors and did not want to distribute details that had not been verified.

Elizondo said the current gym has no connection to Monson or the previous management.

Police Have Released Few Details
Fresno police have not publicly disclosed details about the alleged incident, including information about the alleged victim.

Authorities have also not announced additional charges or indicated whether other potential victims are involved.

The investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue examining the allegations.

Efforts by ABC30 to obtain comment from Monson were unsuccessful.
