Police Investigate Suspicious Death of 70-Year-Old Man in Canberra
Police in Canberra have launched a homicide investigation after the body of a 70-year-old man was discovered inside a home during a welfare check.
Welfare Check Leads to Discovery
Police officers were called to a property on Hanson Place in Watson, in Canberra’s north, at about 7:55am on Monday, October 5.
The officers had been asked to check on the welfare of a resident. A short time after arriving, they discovered the body of a 70-year-old man inside the home.
The circumstances surrounding the man’s death raised concerns, prompting ACT Policing to treat the death as suspicious.
Home Declared a Crime Scene
The property was immediately declared a crime scene as investigators began examining what had happened.
Detectives from the homicide squad were called in to assist with the investigation. Officers are now working to establish the man’s movements and circumstances in the days leading up to his death.
Police have not publicly identified a suspect and have not released a possible motive.

Investigators Search for Information
Detectives are appealing to anyone who may have seen suspicious activity around Hanson Place or the surrounding part of Watson in recent days to come forward.
Investigators are particularly interested in information that could help establish who may have visited the property or been in the area before the man’s death was discovered.
Police are also asking residents and motorists to check any security-camera or dashcam footage that may have captured activity around the street.
Community Asked to Assist Police
Hanson Place is a small residential street located close to the Watson shops, meaning investigators are examining activity in the immediate neighbourhood as part of their inquiries.
Police have urged members of the public not to assume that seemingly insignificant information is unimportant. Even footage or observations that appear unrelated could potentially assist detectives in building a timeline.
Anyone with information is being asked to contact Crime Stoppers.
Investigation Remains Ongoing
The investigation remains in its early stages, and police have not yet publicly explained how the man died or what circumstances led investigators to classify the death as suspicious.
Further information is expected to emerge as forensic examinations and witness inquiries continue.
Authorities are urging anyone who may have information about activity around Hanson Place before the discovery to contact investigators.
