Two Bodies Recovered After Avalanche Strikes Nepal Mountain Base Camp

Two bodies have been recovered after an avalanche struck the base camp of Himlung Himal in Nepal’s Manang district, while rescue teams continue searching for people who remain missing, according to local authorities and international news reports.

Avalanche Hits High-Altitude Base Camp

The avalanche struck the Himlung Himal area on Sunday, September 27, burying tents and affecting local guides and support workers who had been preparing the mountain route for the autumn climbing season.

Himlung Himal rises to 7,126 metres in the Nar Phu region of Manang.

Most of the people at the site were Nepali workers and guides supporting upcoming climbing expeditions. Foreign climbers were not present at the base camp when the avalanche struck, according to reports.

Two Bodies Recovered

Rescue personnel reached the affected area and recovered two bodies from the avalanche site.

The bodies were taken to Chame, where arrangements were being made to transport them to Kathmandu for further procedures.

Search Continues for Missing Workers

Authorities have reported different figures for the number of people who remain unaccounted for as the rescue operation continues.

Early reports said at least 10 people were missing. Later reports from local officials and mountain organisations indicated that the number could be higher, with authorities working to establish an accurate figure.

Several people who had initially been reported out of contact were later confirmed to have reached safety in nearby areas.

Helicopters and Mountain Guides Join Search

Rescue teams have been transported toward the base camp by helicopter, while experienced high-altitude guides are conducting searches around areas where people may have been buried.

Weather conditions initially made the operation difficult, but conditions improved on Monday, allowing rescuers to resume searches on the ground and from the air.

Authorities said the difficult terrain and high altitude continue to present challenges for the rescue teams.

Rescue Operation Remains Underway

The search operation is continuing as authorities work to determine exactly how many people remain missing and locate anyone who may still be trapped beneath the snow.

Officials have not yet released a final casualty figure, and further information is expected as rescue teams reach more areas of the avalanche site.
