Missing Hiker Found Alive After Surviving 10 Days in California Wilderness With Almost No Food

CALIFORNIA — A man who set out for what was supposed to be a three-hour hike survived 10 days alone in the rugged Santa Cruz Mountains, relying on creek water and wild berries before rescuers finally located him.

Lukas McClish, 34, disappeared on June 11, 2024, after entering a remote forest near Boulder Creek, California.

A Three-Hour Walk Turns Into a Survival Ordeal

McClish had expected to return home within hours and brought very few supplies. He carried a flashlight and folding scissors but had no substantial food or camping equipment.

He later explained that wildfire damage had changed the appearance of familiar landmarks, leaving him unable to recognize his surroundings.

As daylight faded, what began as a short excursion became an unexpected fight for survival.

Surviving With Water Collected in His Boot

Over the following days, McClish traveled through canyons and wooded terrain, searching for a route back to civilization.

He collected water from streams and waterfalls using his hiking boot and ate wild berries when available.

With little food and no reliable means of communication, he became increasingly exhausted. He later estimated that he had lost approximately 30 pounds during the ordeal.

His family reported him missing after he failed to attend a Father’s Day gathering.

Desperate Cries Finally Reach Rescuers

On June 20, witnesses reported hearing someone shouting for help near Foreman Creek, close to Big Basin Redwoods State Park.

Emergency responders launched a coordinated operation involving sheriff’s deputies, firefighters, park rangers and specialized search personnel.

Using drones, rescuers eventually identified McClish’s location in a remote canyon.

Ground teams then reached him and helped guide him out of the wilderness.

An Emotional Reunion After 10 Days

Despite spending 10 days exposed to the elements, McClish was rescued without major injuries.

Photographs captured the emotional moment he reunited with his loved ones after emerging from the forest.

His survival drew widespread attention, while emergency officials highlighted the importance of preparation, reliable communication and informing others before entering remote terrain.

For McClish and his family, a frightening disappearance ended with the outcome they had desperately hoped for: he was finally home.
