PART 1: THE STRANGERS IN THE SNOW

“Please, mister… my little girl is freezing.”

Those were the first words the young woman whispered before collapsing into my arms.

It was almost midnight.

A snowstorm had swallowed the lonely roads of northern Montana.

And I had just found a mother and her five-year-old daughter stranded beside a broken-down car.

My name is Jake Harrison. I’m 39 years old, and I’ve lived alone on my cattle ranch for nearly a decade.

I wasn’t looking for love.

I wasn’t looking for a family.

But that night changed everything.

The woman was beautiful, even with snow covering her dark hair.

Her lips were pale, and her hands trembled as she held her daughter close.

“What’s your name?” I asked.

“Emma… Emma Collins.”

“And your little girl?”

“Sophie.”

The child looked at me with frightened blue eyes.

“Are you a real cowboy?”

I smiled gently.

“Last time I checked.”

She gave me a tiny smile.

I wrapped them both in blankets and helped them into my truck.

“My ranch is ten minutes away. You’ll be safe there.”

Emma hesitated.

“We don’t want to cause trouble.”

“Ma’am, staying out here would be a whole lot more trouble.”

At the ranch, I made hot chocolate for Sophie and gave Emma some warm clothes.

While Sophie slept beside the fireplace, Emma stared at the flames.

“Thank you,” she whispered. “You saved us.”

“Where were you headed?”

She looked away.

“Somewhere nobody could find us.”

My stomach tightened.

“Are you running from someone?”

She didn’t answer.

Then I noticed a photograph slipping from her purse.

An older man stood beside Emma.

I recognized him immediately.

Thomas Whitmore.

The wealthy ranch owner who had destroyed my father’s business fifteen years ago.

The man responsible for our family losing nearly everything.

I picked up the photograph.

“Emma… how do you know this man?”

Her face turned white.

“He’s my father.”

I stepped backward.

Thomas Whitmore’s daughter.

Sleeping under my roof.

After everything her family had done to mine.

Before I could speak, headlights swept across the living room window.

A black SUV had stopped outside my ranch gate.

Emma rushed toward Sophie.

“Oh, no…”

“What is it?”

She grabbed my arm.

“Jake, please. Don’t let them take my daughter.”

I looked toward the vehicle.

Two men stepped out into the snow.

One held a flashlight.

The other carried a photograph.

Then my phone rang.

An unknown number.

I answered.

A deep voice said:

“Mr. Harrison, this is Thomas Whitmore.”

My blood ran cold.

“I believe you have something that belongs to me.”

I looked at Emma.

She was crying silently, holding Sophie against her chest.

Then Thomas said something I never expected.

“That little girl is the only heir to my $80 million estate.”

I couldn’t move.

“And Mr. Harrison…”

His voice became cold.

“Her mother has no idea what really happened to your father.”
