Dallas Firefighter’s Baby Son Goes Home After Four Surgeries and Months in Hospital

A four-month-old baby in Dallas, Texas, has finally returned home after spending most of his short life in hospital and undergoing four surgeries for a life-threatening intestinal condition.

Kenji Kammerer, the son of Dallas firefighter Ian Kammerer and his wife, Lindsey, became critically ill when he was just five weeks old. His parents had not previously known that anything was seriously wrong with him.

One day in June, Ian and Lindsey noticed that their baby suddenly became extremely unwell. His skin became pale and he began crying in a way that alarmed his parents. Ian immediately called for emergency medical help.

Doctors at Medical City Children’s Hospital discovered that Kenji had intestinal malrotation, a condition in which the intestines do not develop in their normal position and can twist, cutting off their blood supply. Doctors said the situation was potentially fatal.

Kenji required emergency treatment and eventually underwent four surgeries. His condition also caused complications involving multiple organ systems. During his recovery, more than 75 members of the hospital staff became involved in his care, according to local reports.

For his parents, the months in hospital were filled with uncertainty. Lindsey recalled asking one of Kenji’s doctors whether her son would survive.

Doctors later said that the family’s quick reaction was important. Kenji was brought to the hospital rapidly, giving medical teams an opportunity to begin treatment before his condition deteriorated further.

After 77 days in hospital and four operations, Kenji was finally strong enough to leave.

His departure became a celebration. Hospital workers lined the corridors while Dallas firefighters gathered to support the family. Staff members held maracas, pom-poms and bubbles as Kenji was carried through the hospital on his way home. The medical team also presented him with a “Certificate of Courage.”

For Ian and Lindsey, the experience also created a deep connection with the people who cared for their son. Lindsey said the hospital staff had become part of their extended support system during the long hospitalization.

Kenji is now home with his parents, beginning a very different chapter after spending more time in hospital than outside it during his first months of life.
